Longitudinal changes in depression in older adults£ºDifferences across age groups and risk factors
Lee Hyun-Joo

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship between age and depression in older adults and the effects of risk factors on depression trajectory. It focuses on the age group differences in depression trajectories. Subjects were 8,466 individuals aged 50 and over who participated in the first, second, and third wave of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Data are analyzed using Latent growth curve modeling and Multi-group analysis. Research findings indicated that depressive symptoms in older adults are increased with age. The sixties exhibited faster rate of change as well as higher initial level of depressive symptom than the fifties did. The seventies demonstrated significant difference in terms of initial level of depression symptom in comparison with the sixties, and maintained similar level of degree of change. The effects of health and economic variables on depression trajectory were also identified. This implies that it is required to consider the differences across age groups and the impacts of health and economic status in order to properly understand geriatric depression and to acquire a right direction for the intervention in it. Based on the findings, implications for intervention and future research were discussed.
